The theme of the Assembly presented on 8th January 2020 by class 4 C was Makar Sankranthi. The thought for the day ‘Unity is strength. With teamwork and collaboration wonderful things can be achieved’ set the tone for the day.
Students showcased how the festival is celebrated throughout India with splendor and glory. Each region has its distinct way of celebration. Forms are different but the purpose is same, bidding goodbye to the winter season and giving a rousing welcome to the spring season.
As it is the festival of Sun God and he is regarded as the symbol of divinity and wisdom, the students recited Sanskrit shloka to worship the Sun god. Makar Sankranthi is believed traditionally to mark the arrival of spring in India. Students sang a melodious Bengali song ‘Poush Toder Dak Diyeche’ the essence of which was:
The Winter Season Poush is calling you all;
Her basket is today filled with Ripe Harvest,
Seeing the beauty of which I am wonder struck.
Students narrated how the Harvest festival is celebrated in various States of India. The children performed a vibrant and energetic dance medley of Punjabi Bhangra and Assamese Bihu dance. The dances brought out the true essence of the day which was ‘fun and festivities.’ The quiz master did a perfect job by asking interesting questions related to Sankranthi.
