“Poetry comes alive to me through recitation” said Natalie Merchant!
“Poetiques” an Interschool Poetry recitation Competition was conducted by Royal Concorde International School. Schools across Bangalore participated with there were almost 400 contestants!
The task in the preliminary round was challenging, the students had to recite the poems allotted to them, of about 16 lines, make a video and send it across for selection. With their voice modulation, dramatic appropriateness, accuracy and overall performance, 3 out of the 4 students we sent up, from school were declared finalists. They were; Akshara Menon of Class 1, Shubhankar Dhongde of Class 3 and Tiera Nevil Sebastian of Class 4.
The last stage of the competition had our three finalists recite poems, ‘Live’, before the other contestants and judges. Perhaps, their relaxed and natural way, the confidence with which they recited the poem, seeming to enjoy it, and making a direct connection with the audience saw Shubhankar Dhongde of Class 3 and Tiera Nevil Sebastian of Class 4 secure the 2nd place in their respective categories.
“The Public recitation of great poetry is a way to honour the speaker, the poem and the audience all at once”. Our young competitors did us proud!
